Colors of Mehendi (Heena)
Mehendi does not have any caste or religion. It’s a symbol of  beauty & “Suhaag”. No Indian wedding is complete without decorating the bride’s  hands with the lovely red hue of mehendi. It is called with different names in different languages. In Urdu, “Heena”, in Sanskrit,”Ranzak”, in Kannad, “Guranti”, in Tamil,”Maruthani”. Mehendi is not only A fashion – it’s a tradition; it’s a necessity that enhances bride’s beauty.

Why Mehendi gives the red color?

Mehendi leaves contain a chemical known as “lason” that belongs to “Mepthokinon” class of chemicals. Our hands consist of network of protein threads which has a special Amino acid. The reaction of Lason & Amino acid produces lovely red hue.

Mehendi is applied on both the front and back of the hands right up to the elbow. And on both the feet and legs upto the half of the legs. Mehendi night is one of the special function of the wedding. In-laws bring shagun’s mehendi. Family, friends and relatives sing traditional mehendi songs. In some parts of India the mehendi ceremony is so secred that only mother in law is supposed to apply the first dot of mehendi on bride’s hand, this dot is considered to be the blessings and love of mother in law. One of the common belief is that the deeper the color of mehendi will be-the deeper the love you receive from in-laws particularly the mother in law. Bride’s are treated “Nai Naveli” .They are not supposed to do any house hold work till they have the dark mehendi color on their hands.

A good design is sign of good luck for the martial couple. The most popular symbols of Good shagun in mehendi design’s are Peacock, Lotus, an elephant with the raised trunk, Shehnai, kalash with mango leaves around it.
